What is "Veterans' Tales of War," about?
“Veterans' Tales of War,” is something I wanted to design so the veteran interviews I conduct would be made available. It started as a project to achieve the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award for Girl Scouts. Not only is “Veterans' Tales of War,” a way of giving future generations a way to learn about military conflicts through someone’s experience, it honors the veterans’ sacrifices, risks, time and energy they went through during their time in the service.
About Me
My interest in veterans mainly started when I learned something my maternal grandfather never told me about: he was stationed in Japan during World War II’s postwar era. I later became interested in World War II, and those who served, when I learned more about the war in Europe and read a book called “Number the Stars.” My newfound interest in veterans then expanded when my grandfather told me I had family members who served in Korea and Vietnam. It later continued to expand to those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq after I saw my dad watching the last 4 brief interviews from a documentary called "Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq." When I started working on my Girl Scout Gold Award, this gave me the opportunity to learn about veterans’ service and experiences, and preserve them for future generations. Through “Veterans' Tales of War,” my ongoing goal is to grant future generations an understanding of what it was like to fight or live through a war and what it was like to be in the military. Veterans' Tales of War is dedicated to my grandfather, who passed away in August of 2020.
