The War on Terror or the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) was an ongoing international campaign launched by the U.S government in response to the attacks on September 11th, 2001 by the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. Most of the conflict occurred in Afghanistan and Iraq, but covert operations regarding the War on Terror occurred globally. All of this led to a massive increase in military spending and assistance. In the earlier years of the war, military action and emphasis revolved around arresting terrorist suspects, preventing additional terrorist attacks in the United States, and dismantling the Taliban regime and the senior members of al-Qaeda.
In the aftermath of 9/11, former President George Bush declared a military campaign called the War on Terror. GWOT also encompassed all actions that aimed to deny safe harbor to terrorists, including financially supporting terrorist organizations. On September 20th, 2001, President Bush warned the Taliban that the war would not cease until they stopped sheltering al-Qaeda members and eradicated terrorism. Four days later, he signed Executive Order 13224, which prohibited transactions that could potentially support terrorist organizations. On October 7th, 2001, airstrikes were launched by the United States and the United Kingdom; Afghani, Taliban, and al-Qaeda training camps were targeted. The U.S and their allies provided humanitarian aid to citizens of Afghanistan. On March 19th, 2003, military operations occurred to remove Saddam Hussein, an Iraqi politician, from power; this included the Iraq War, taking place from Mar.20th, 2003 – Dec.15th, 2011.
